Are Live Gigs Your Main Source of Income? Then We’ve Got’a Make You Money
For many who have been at this for a while and tried every way to make a living CD sales are small unless you get promotion from a major media source like syndicated newspaper or television interviews. They don’t guarantee significant sales numbers. Some have carved out a good living by selling or licensing tracks for commercials. It can be lucrative but hard to score. There are other avenues like voice overs and radio commercials. These are short tracks, good for padding your income but not as a main source. It comes down to one thing, performing live. With an average band of five members it’s hard to make good money with so many clubs turning to alternative entertainment. But don’t get discouraged.Clubs make money by selling food and alcohol. Entertainment keeps them drinking. From a club owners point of view the least expensive the act the better but many are finding  acts like Karaoke and board games turn the room into a hangout instead of a party .How do you reach a compromise?Try this. Play for the door or play for half of your normal fee and the full door. At $250 a night and $3 at the door with a 225 capacity that’s $925 or $1’950 for the weekend divided by 5 is $390 each. There’s going to be turn over which means if the room turns over once, you’ve doubled the income. Even if there’s no cover after 12:00 the average room will turn over before that.Rotate several clubs, eight would seem ideal all within a thirty mile radius. As promotion encourage the club owner to post schedules of coming attractions. Share a newspaper advertisement with the club owner and several other bands appearing there. While pricey sharing the cost can bring it down to a couple of hundred dollars for a ¼ page ad. Many clubs have a website with scheduled entertainment along with menu and bar. Ok you’re competing for web real estate with the One Pound Chucky Burger but that’s life. You can get together and share a website promoting all of you. Sites are inexpensive and DYS web designer programs are pretty easy to use. Whatever methods you use to promote, I always emphasize from experience everything needs to be professional from business cards to posters.
